ABOUT The world’s undisputed No. 1 funk jam, now in its fourteenth year. Maestro Keb Darge spins the best from the last five decades of black American music. Alongside the regular funksters, some of the UK's hottest breakers and jazz dancers strut their stuff. Over the years many famous names have turned up as surprise guests, including DJ Shadow, Kenny Dope, Pete Rock, Cash Money, DJ Spinna and Paul Weller, and they are still queueing up to play for love, not money, at this legendary night. RESIDENT DJS KEB DARGE Recognised worldwide as the foremost funk and soul DJ, with a Northern Soul collection begun in 1973, Keb was a regular at the Wigan Casino throughout the seventies. Following its closure in the early eighties, Keb along with Guy Hennigan took up the torch for the music they loved, reviving the languishing Northern soul scene. In 2008 Hennigan and Darge clocked up the 25th anniversary of their DJ partnership; they are credited with building widespread appreciation of quality original funk and soul and introducing it to a new generation of fans. Keb has produced numerous compilations, both solo and with names like The RZA (Wu-Tang Clan), DJ Shadow, Pete Rock, and Kenny Dope Gonzales, with whom he now runs Kay-Dee records, a New York-based label. Kay-Dee brings us many of the tunes played on Friday nights at Madame Jojo's; written, arranged and produced by Keb, so that his playbox remains forever fresh. This summer saw the farewell sessions from the celebrated Hennigan and Darge duo, before Guy Hennigan left the UK to live in Japan. Keb Darge has found a new and worthy DJ partner in Lucinda Slim. LUCINDA SLIM Born in Belgium, with a Belgian mother and Senegalese father, Lucinda was passionate about music from an early age and discovered West African music through her family. At 19 she made a demo tape which eventually found its way into the hands of Marie Daulne, the founder and leader of Zap Mama, the Belgian female vocal group with deep African roots. Daulne tracked down Lucinda, who was living in London at the time. She quit her job, came to Belgium for an audition, rehearsed for three weeks and found herself at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, with Zap Mama opening for the Neville Brothers. For the last ten years she has toured the world as a vocalist with Zap Mama, including headlining at the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall, and has recorded four albums with them. Other artists she has worked and toured with include Youssou N'Dour, Sergio Mendez, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Ultrasonic, DJ 4T4 and Flowriders. Amy Winehouse once told Lucinda she was a better singer than herself after a drunken duet at Amy's house. Lucinda has just recorded her album ‘Lucinda Slim and the Lawmen’ with the Dap Kings - the band behind Amy Winehouse - and Mark Ronson. When she crossed paths with funk maestro DJ Keb Darge fifteen years ago, Lucinda started collecting rare funk and soul. Having been a regular DJ at the Apollo Barcelona, she is now a Deep Funk resident, partnering Keb Darge on Fridays at Madame Jojo's, spinning soul, funk, disco and blues. REVIEWS "Where else can you begin your weekend other than with Keb Darge's funky session?" - London Careers. "Monster underground tunes abound at this top class night" - What's On In London. "Keb Darge's legendary soul and funkfest takes care of Friday" - Time Out Visitors Guide.
